Tom Groggin Campground is a picturesque camping area nestled along the banks of the upper Murray River in the southern precinct of Kosciuszko National Park, New South Wales. Situated between Khancoban and Thredbo, just off the Alpine Way, it offers a serene valley setting with stunning mountain and riverside backdrops.
Campground Features
Spacious and Secluded Sites: The campground provides ample room for relaxed camping in open areas, allowing visitors to choose spots that suit their preference for sun or shade. Facilities: Amenities include drop toilets, fire pits, and picnic tables. Campers should bring their own drinking water and firewood. Wildlife Encounters: The open grasslands are home to a large population of eastern grey kangaroos, and visitors may also spot emus, echidnas, brush-tailed possums, lyrebirds, flame robins, and crimson rosellas. Recreational Activities: The campground serves as an ideal base for fishing, bushwalking, mountain biking, and 4WD adventures in southern Kosciuszko National Park.
Access and Booking
Access: Tom Groggin Campground is accessible via the Alpine Way. However, the road between Thredbo and Khancoban is steep, narrow, and winding, making it unsuitable for vehicles towing large caravans. Booking and Fees: While camping is free, a park entry fee applies. Visitors can pay the fee via the Park'nPay app or at designated entry points.
Important Informatin
2025 Upgrade Works: The NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service is undertaking upgrade works at Tom Groggin Campground throughout 2025. These include additions to campground facilities, rehabilitation planting, restoration of damaged surfaces, and construction of a new shelter at the day-use area. Some areas of the lower campground may be closed during winter 2025.
