We leave Perth and head south,
First stop Cockburn Central to visit Bunnings, and Autobarn, and a get a coffee.
We head to Bodhinyana Monastery, started by Ajhan Brahm, a Buddhist monk.
We had a look around and visited the main hall to Meditate (left a donation).
From the Monastery, we headed to Stockton Lake, arriving at 3pm.
The campsite was free at this time. I believe normally there is a cost, and the ranger collects.
Located just east of Collie in Western Australia’s South West, Stockton Lake is a striking inland lake known for its vivid turquoise-blue water, forest surrounds, and relaxed bush camping atmosphere. Fringed by jarrah forest and open camping areas, it has become a favourite destination for campers, caravanners, swimmers, kayakers, and boating enthusiasts looking for a scenic getaway close to town.
The lake’s brilliant colour is what first captures most visitors. Set against the earthy tones of the bushland and tall native trees, Stockton Lake feels more like a tropical lagoon than an inland lake. Spacious camping areas around the shoreline cater for tents, camper trailers, caravans, and motorhomes, with basic facilities available and plenty of room to spread out. The lake is popular for swimming, paddle sports, boating, and water skiing, while evenings around camp offer peaceful bushland views and star-filled skies.
Stockton Lake has an industrial past. What is now a recreational lake was once an open-cut coal mine, part of the rich coal mining industry that helped shape the Collie region for over a century. After mining operations ceased, the pit gradually filled with groundwater and rainfall, creating the lake seen today. Over time, nature reclaimed the surrounding landscape, and the former mine site was adapted into a recreational area for locals and visitors alike. The transformation from coal mine to popular camping and water recreation spot is one of the South West’s more remarkable examples of land rehabilitation.
Visitors should be aware that the water has a slightly lower pH than natural freshwater lakes, and depths can drop away quickly in places. While safe for many recreational activities, swimmers are encouraged to use caution, particularly in deeper water and colder conditions.
