Gil Weir is a charming and free riverside campsite located about 6 km south of Miles on the Leichhardt Highway, nestled along Dogwood Creek within the Western Downs region. It's a peaceful getaway ideal for relaxation, fishing, paddling, and wildlife spotting.

Campsites & Facilities

  • Free Camping: No fees or bookings required. Maximum stay of 4 days.
  • Vehicle Access: Easily reached via Gil Weir Road from the highway; suitable for tents, caravans, motorhomes, and big rigs.
  • Facilities: Includes composting toilets, picnic shelters, wood-fired BBQs, picnic tables, bin facilities, and a boat ramp.
  • Pets Welcome: Dog-friendly (on-leash), and generator use is permitted.

Recreation & Wildlife

  • Fishing & Boating: Known for Murray cod and golden perch; perfect for small boats and paddlecraft (permit required for fishing).
  • Swimming & Canoeing: A natural swim spot with gentle creek waters and a boat ramp.
  • Birdwatching: A haven for birdlife—including pelicans that roost on nearby trees.
