Oberon Reef Reserve

The Reef Reserve is a scenic and tranquil free camping area located approximately 3.5 km from the center of Oberon, New South Wales. Nestled along the shores of Lake Oberon, this reserve offers a peaceful retreat for nature lovers, anglers, and campers seeking a serene environment.​

Camping Facilities

The reserve provides around 20 unpowered campsites set amidst native eucalypt trees and grasslands. Campers can enjoy facilities such as:​

  • Toilets: Including disabled access.​
  • Picnic Shelters: Equipped with tables and gas barbecues.​
  • Fire Pits: Designated areas for campfires.​
  • Boat Ramp: Suitable for launching canoes, kayaks, and small electric-powered boats.​
  • Rubbish Bins: Available for waste disposal.​

Campers are permitted to stay for up to 72 hours, and pets are welcome but must be kept on a leash. ​

Recreational Activities

Lake Oberon is renowned for its trout fishing, with both fly fishing and spinning permitted year-round. Other fish species include Murray Cod, Yellow Belly, and Redfin. ​

Boating is restricted to unpowered and electric-powered vessels, with a speed limit of four knots. Life jackets are mandatory for all vessels under 4.8 meters in length, including canoes and kayaks. ​

Walking and Nature Trails

The reserve features walking tracks that meander through granite rocks and native vegetation, leading to the lake's edge. These trails offer opportunities for birdwatching and enjoying the area's natural beauty. ​

Location and Access

The Reef Reserve is accessible via The Reef Road, just off Abercrombie Road, making it a convenient destination for campers traveling by car. The unsealed road is suitable for 2WD vehicles, though caution is advised during wet conditions
