Macquarie Woods Recreation Area is a serene and spacious bushland retreat nestled within Vittoria State Forest, approximately halfway between Bathurst and Orange in New South Wales. Covering 600 hectares, this area serves as a demonstration forest, showcasing both exotic conifer plantations and native woodlands comprising species like yellow box, Blakely’s red gum, red stringybark, and apple box eucalypts .

Camping & Facilities

Macquarie Woods offers free, pet-friendly camping suitable for tents, caravans, and campervans. The campground features unallocated, grassy sites with ample space, ensuring availability even during peak times . Facilities include long-drop toilets, picnic tables, fire pits, and an information shelter . Visitors should note that there is no potable water on-site, and access roads are unsealed but generally navigable by 2WD vehicles in dry conditions .

The area is ideal for nature enthusiasts, offering:

  • Bushwalking & Hiking: Several trails, including a 2.7-mile loop through pine forests and across Rogans Creek, provide opportunities for walking, mountain biking, and running .
  • Lookout Points: A designated lookout offers extensive views of the Macquarie Valley, perfect for photography and relaxation .
  • Wildlife Observation: The diverse habitats support a variety of native fauna, making it a great spot for birdwatching and wildlife spotting.

Access: Approximately 30 minutes west of Bathurst via the Mitchell Highway.
